Fighting with Noise

Our interview series starts with the relatively young band 'Fighting with Noise' featuring veteran musicians Scott Johnstone, Aaron Lowchewtung and Noah Rahman and a power house lead singer Jordan Lum Hung. Since their formation in late 2022 they have released a few songs and have a strong following both from their live shows and their online releases.

What’s the meaning behind the name of the band?

- The project started off as an avenue of self-expression, especially for the more chaotic parts of living with mental health struggles. The band was made for literally fighting with noise.

What genre would you classify the band as?

- Alternative metal/rock. Admittedly we are also very experimental and try to not be constrained by genre. Each band member has distinct tastes in music that we bring to the writing table.

What similar bands would you suggest to fans of yours?

- Every time we’re asked this question, we find it hard to find “similar” bands, but we do have major influences in writing - Loathe, Korn, Smashing Pumpkins, Teenage Wrist, Paramore, Deftones, Metallica. Plus, non-rock artists like Sevdaliza and The 1975.

What are the core themes for the song - Eat My Love?

- Vulnerability, love, fear, acceptance, passion

What was the writing process behind the song - Eat My Love?

- Jordan felt that through art and lyricism, she was revealing a part of her that is very intimate. It’s written from the standpoint that in some ways self-expression is needed - but at the same time, hopes (the listener) doesn’t twist what she sings sometimes into anything vile. It’s a push and pull between being okay with sharing vulnerabilities, whilst also acknowledging that audience reception and interpretation is all part of it.

Musically, Scott came up with the idea for a shorter, more succinct song. It’s still a heavy song. Though, EML definitely does take a different approach with a softer and more passionate theme. After bass and drums are recorded, Noah and Scott would go back and forth on production and mixing ideas, until they arrive at a finished product.
