Maart's Rock and Indie Mix 1

Our weekly picks are back! We're have expanded to 10 picks per week so make sure and follow each of the playlists to see what we're listening to and discover some new great local and international songs. Week one will be Maarten's playlist featuring Rock, Indie and Alternative songs from recently released to classic songs. Get a little behind the scenes for the choices below! 1. Soucouyant - Sint James

This is probably my favourite song by Sint James. I got to co-produce this song with the band and I think we really captured the mood and vibe of the band and the song with this release. I think Sint James is probably my favourite Caribbean Artist to come out in the last 5 years and this is a great blend of Caribbean moods with Indie vibes

2. Paranoid - Hippo Campus

Been a fan of Hippo Campus for probably the last 7 years since their debut 'Landmark' album released in 2017. A great indie/rock band from Minnesota and their latest single really throws back to the indie rock feel

3. Monday Morning Love Situation - Jointpop

It's funny that I was never a huge fan of Jointpop when they were playing shows in the mid 2000s and early 2010s but I remember seeing them at a show in 2012 at some local festival and was truly blown away and since then I've realized they are the epitome of Caribbean Rock and Roll.

4. Lithonia - Childish Gambino

Donald Glover is such a prolific artist in every sense of the word. The Childish Gambino project is beyond genres and just gives a feel of honesty with the delivery and song writing. Co-written and produced by Ludwig Göransson and Max Martin this is probably the most non-indie, song on this playlist but its been stuck in my head since its release. #fartbucklethegoblin

5. Beautiful Day - Orange Sky

Probably the biggest rock band to come out of the Caribbean, Orange Sky are legendary. I got to work with the boys in Orange Sky on several occasions and this song in particular was always one of my favourites. I even used this song in my digital wedding invitation.

6. Act Appalled - Circa Survive

This band along with Thrice have been the most influential on my guitar playing and approach to music composition. Their approach to dual guitars with counter melody and rhythms really compliments the solid bass and drum foundation and crazy range of Anthony Green's voice.

7. Eat My Love - Fighting With Noise

The newest release by one of the newest Caribbean bands. This band continues to create a great buzz with their mix of dreamy and aggressive sounds. The Alternative feel really suites Jordan's voice in my opinion and I hope we hear more of this side of Fighting with Noise.

8. Oscar Wilde - Company of Thieves

I discovered this band through their lead singer Genevieve from an Audiotree session that I saw during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her unique voice just made me seek out what else she did and when I heard this song I instantly became a fan. Lyrically this song just resonates with me and Marc's guitar playing kinda defines Chicago indie rock.

9. Sunrise - The Narrows

The Narrows is one of those bands that could have come out in any decade and had tons of fans. Their music is timeless and trendy at the same time. Sabo and Rae's vocals are so perfectly complimentary that once you hear them, all other harmonies just seem lame in comparison. This is probably my favourite song from them as it just captures the mood of the lyrics with the soothing performance and composition of the band.

10. Red Hands - The Dear Hunter

The Dear Hunter is one of those bands that you have to listen to a few albums to really appreciate the band. They are technically a prog rock band as all their releases are conceptual in nature but Casey Crescenzo's vocal delivery and guitar playing spans all sorts of genres. Red Hands is one of my favourite songs of all time which is part of a 6 album story revolving around a fictional character called Ms. Leading. Definitely worth a deep dive if you got a few hours to spare.
